Why do you charge to unbaste or unpin a quilt before quilting it?
I am unable to quilt the quilt top on the longarm if it is basted or pinned together. Unlike quilting by hand or with a domestic sewing machine, the longarm machine will break if it hits a pin when the quilt is pinned together. If it is basted together, the long arm machine could get tangled up in the basting threads. The quilt top will be basted on the sides and top once the quilt top is placed on the machine along with the backing and batting. Since I would have to remove the basting & pins, I would have to charge for this time.
What is the best way to present the quilt top for longarm quilting?
Bring the quilt to me in separate pieces. The quilt top and the backing should be pressed, folded into thirds, and placed over a hanger or folded carefully in a box or bag. The batting can be folded or in the original bag if purchased in a bag. The backing fabric and batting need to be 8 inches longer and wider than the pieced quilt top.
What other things should a person who wants a quilt top quilted consider?
- Make sure all threads are clipped. Stray threads may show through lighter fabrics.
- Backing and batting must be at LEAST 8 inches larger than the quilt top. If your quilt top measures 40” x 40” then the batting and backing must be at LEAST 48” x 48”.
- Make sure your backing has been squared. If I square it up, there will be an additional charge. If uncertain how to square up a piece of fabric, ask your local quilt shop or fabric store.
- Be aware that extra fullness or puckers cannot be quilted out. I will do the best I can to ease the fullness, but quilting will not be able to remove extra fullness or puckers.
Why all the charges for extra patterns quilted in a quilt?
It takes more time for me to place and quilt each pattern. An edge to edge design is the most economical type of quilting.
What is edge to edge quilting?
Edge to edge quilting includes one design or large stippling or meandering pattern over the entire quilt with no special border patterns. The pattern goes across the entire length and width of the quilt. You can choose from many designs that I offer. Edge to Edge quilting works well for “busy” fabrics or for quilts that will be used heavily. This is the most economical type of quilting.
What is custom quilting?
Custom quilting includes designs that are specific to your quilt such as “stitch-in-the-ditch”, small stippling, or any two patterns. This would include a single pattern stitched over the main part of the quilt top with a complimentary, but different pattern on the borders.
What is heirloom quilting?
Heirloom quilting includes specific block designs or 2 or more designs on your quilt top and border including stitch in the ditch, and includes any combination of patterns or designs. I have hundreds of designs to choose from, and I am able to add designs from reputable web sites.
How do you figure the cost of quilting a quilt?
I multiply the length of the quilt top X the width of the quilt top X the price of the quilting desired per inch. For example, a 60” (length) X 72” (width) X $0.02 (edge to edge quilting) = $86.40.
Do you measure before the quilt is quilted or after the quilt is quilted?
I will measure before and after I quilt the quilt. Quilting draws up the layers reducing the size of the quilt sometimes by as much as several inches. For pricing purposes only (estimate), your quilt top will be measured prior to any quilting. However, the actual cost will be based on the finished size. Please call or e-mail if you have any questions.
Do you have a smoke free home?
Yes, all quilting is done in a smoke free environment.
Do you have a minimum quilting charge?
Yes. My minimum quilting charge is $50.00.
What do you mean by edge finishing?
Most quilts are bound with binding to cover the raw edges of the quilt. Most people elect to finish the edges of the quilt themselves. However, I can finish the edges of the quilt with binding either made by you or by me. Typically I do not cut the binding on the bias unless doing an edging on a scalloped border or some type of curved border. The choice is yours: you can finish the edges yourself or I will finish the edges for you. Again, there will be a charge for this service and also a charge for cutting the binding if I make the binding. Please see pricing for charges for these services.
